Ethel's Story
Ethel had little education, few skills, and no future. As a prostitute and an addict, her childhood dreams of a family and career were a distant, fading memory.

Welcome to Michigan AIDS Fund online!
Thank you for visiting the new Michigan AIDS Fund web site. Entering the third decade of the epidemic, AIDS doesn’t make headlines anymore. Medicines keep people alive longer, and there’s better care for those who are sick. For many, AIDS is no longer a crisis -- until they, or someone they know, test positive.

Then they understand there is still no cure. Worse, it didn’t have to happen because HIV is preventable. That’s when nearly 1,000 people in Michigan each year discover the AIDS crisis isn’t over.

Since 1989, the Michigan AIDS Fund has been a leader in supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS. Today, we’re just as committed to reversing the epidemic - one crisis at a time – by preventing HIV infections. Until there’s a cure, it’s the only strategy that absolutely works.

I hope you’ll join us in the fight to end the AIDS epidemic.
10 years, countless benefits:
AmeriCorps Team Detroit celebrates milestone
The Michigan AIDS Fund is best known for providing funds to organizations fighting to prevent HIV/AIDS, but we’re just as excited to offer them workers, too. Each year our AmeriCorps team provides critical full-time staffing to HIV/AIDS organizations in southeast Michigan. Nearly 1,000 new individuals in Michigan are diagnosed with HIV every year, and through AmeriCorps Team Detroit, Michigan Aids Fund responds with real-life help for agencies on the front-lines of the epidemic. AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace Corps, engages Americans in community service to meet our nation's critical needs. We’re proud to have recently selected our tenth team and, beginning in September, new members will again be trained to serve as HIV/AIDS prevention educators, testers and counselors.

Since 1997, we’ve partnered with the National AIDS Fund to sponsor the only AmeriCorps team in Michigan focusing solely on HIV/AIDS. The AmeriCorps team doesn’t just benefit HIV/AIDS organizations, however; it also helps develop community leaders by giving members valuable new skills and a heightened commitment to service.

In fact, many past team members are now employed full-time in the field, representing the next generation of leaders in the fight against the disease.

AmeriCorps Team Detroit has been training leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS for 10 years.

Speakers put face on AIDS epidemic

For too many, AIDS is no longer a crisis. It doesn’t make headlines anymore, and medicines keep people alive longer.

The epidemic becomes real, however, when someone you know tests positive. That’s when you realize, the crisis isn’t over.

The moving stories of brave HIV-positive individuals are helping put a face to AIDS and making it real for audiences across Michigan.

A Positive Perspective, our speaker’s bureau, offers testimonials about what it’s like to live with HIV/AIDS. These stories help personalize the risks of HIV infection and promote positive behavioral changes.

Listeners identify with the speakers and quickly learn that they, too, may be vulnerable.

A Positive Perspective is part of our goal of reversing the epidemic, one crisis at a time, by preventing new HIV infections.

There is no charge for this service, and speakers address a variety of audiences, including schools, faith-based groups, treatment programs and others.

To arrange a presentation, organizations can call Michigan AIDS Fund at 248.395.3244.

Help Us Out
The Michigan Drug Users Health Alliance (MIDUHA), which was convened by the Michigan AIDS Fund, is a group of agencies/organizations/individuals concerned about the health of drug users. The mission of MIDUHA is to promote good health among drug users through public policy, collaboration, funding, education, prevention, and treatment.

Currently MIDUHA is conducting an on-line survey. The purpose of this survey is to: 1) determine community needs related to information about drug user health in Michigan, and 2) establish MIDUHA priorities.
